Athena in Action: A Networking and Mentoring Workshop for Graduate Student Women in Philosophy brings together a group of graduate students with a group of women faculty mentors for three days of substantive philosophical discussion and professional advice sessions. Participants benefit from getting to know the other talented graduate students and the faculty members, and from hearing the mentors’ advice on topics of interest to women in the profession. The fifth workshop will take place at Rutgers University from June 27-30, 2022. It will bring together twelve faculty mentors and about 40 graduate students in philosophy, drawn from a range of schools, PhD program stages, and areas of interest. 35 graduate student participants will be chosen from beyond Rutgers University, and roughly 5 graduate students will be chosen from Rutgers' PhD program. The workshop will feature seven paper sessions, with two student commentators each, plus five advice sessions. All paper sessions will be pre-read discussion sessions. Advice sessions will consist of brief comments from some of the mentors followed by a general question-and-answer period. The following topics will be addressed: getting the most out of graduate school; writing a dissertation; publishing; presenting and participating at conferences; preparing for and going on the job market; teaching; starting a tenure-track job; and balancing work with the rest of life. The first three workshops were held at Princeton in the summers of 2014, 2016, 2018. The fourth workshop was hosted by Cornell in the summer of 2020, and held online due to the pandemic. There has been tremendous interest in these workshops; for example, 180 students applied for the 35 spots in 2016. Overall, the first four workshops reached more than 160 graduate students across seven years. Contact us: [email protected] |
